Background

In March of 1974, Ian Corday, a member of the Varsity Outdoors Club, placed an ad in the Ubyssey encouraging students interested in forming a ski club to attend a meeting. At the meeting, ideas were shared and those in attendance donated one dollar to cover advertising expenses for the launch of the club in the September. A constitution was drawn up, submitted to the Alma Mater Society, and the UBC Ski Club was born.

In 1996-7, membership dropped to less than 340 students while the UBC Snowboarding Club made its debut with over 100 members. After three swift meetings, the Ski Club successfully negotiated the takeover of the snowboarders' club for a mere $600. Following a successful referendum vote in March 1996, the combined club was renamed the UBC Ski and Snowboarding Club.
