Capitalization of Hut Names

Should the word 'Hut' be capitalized? IMO, it is part of the name, so it should be. -Scott

I think you're right Scott, I just looked at Wikipedia for inspiration and found their "List of stadiums" and they link to, for example, Wembley Stadium... I guess huts are the same thing as stadiums, right? I'll go ahead and fix the hut names now. Chris Michalak 17:41, 9 Mar 2004 (EST)

Copying stuff from the static website

Roland, who authored the VOC huts info on the regular VOC website, has given his authorization for using/adapting that text to the wiki. So feel free to copy parts of it verbatim, you are not violating any copyrights! (or pissing anyone off).

Secret Huts

What is the outdoor-etiquette about posting information about secret or illegal huts? Obviously there are many huts that are clearly quite secret and the builders/maintainers (and other users!) would not appreciate the information being posted on a public website. However there are many huts which fall in a gray zone. How do we decide if we should post information about them? If there is information about them on another public website, does this mean that we can/should post info about it here as well? How about if information is available on a member-based website such as Bivouac, but no-where else on the web? Should we post info about the hut here? Where do we draw the line?

[EDIT to remove some hut names - it's a time honoured Canadian tradition to build illegal secret huts in Crown land. It used to be another time-honoured tradition to try to keep those huts secret. Can we agree to try to respect that tradition? Lee Lau [email protected] VOC 1998]

VOC Hut Fees

I understand that the official policy for VOC huts is that a donation of $5 is suggested. I understand that if we have a hut use fee, we will have to pay a lot of money for insurance. Should we change the wording of this page to reflect the 'suggested donation' policy or leave it as is?

Registration Page

The Registrationfeature on the individual hut pages seems to be getting a lot of use lately. I think it might be better if this was done on a seperate page, if only to keep the frequency of edits to the main hut pages down. This would make tracking actual changes to the content of these pages much easier. In some ways, the registration concept is more like a "talk" page than an article. The new page could be called Hut registration or something like that and could handle registration functions for all 4 VOC huts. Scott Nelson 10:56, 14 December 2006 (MST)

I think this is probably a good idea. There is some small chance that the extra click required would lower the number of people who bothered to register though. Since probably mostly everyone goes to the specific hut page, and would then have to follow a link. It's probably still worthwhile though. Scott Webster 12:13, 14 December 2006 (MST)

Hut Condition Updates

I think that hut condition updates should be posted on the discussion page rather than on the main page for a hut. The main reason for this would be to enable better revision tracking. I think that hut condition bulletins aren't really part of the core data of the page and should be handled separately on the discussion page. Scott Nelson 12:18, 10 July 2007 (PDT)

Might be a good idea... but I'm not sure they really fit in on the discussion page either. This is basically just a limitation of mediawiki. The bivouac site is better in this regard with their bulletins. Scott Webster 17:41, 10 July 2007 (PDT)

Hut Maps

I added maps for the huts based on info on the wiki and on Bivouac. It would be nice to combine them all together with different icons for VOC/Other/Emergency huts, but I couldn't quite get the icons parameter to work in <googlemap> Marcin 23:33, 5 December 2010 (PST)
