Check the message board for the latest updates.

Location

UBC Aquatic centre, heated outdoor pool

Costs

It's a flat $15 per person, or $10 if you drive a boat (to offset the cost of parking). This basically pays for the cost of the 1.5h pool session. When a lot of people come out we have a surplus of $, and when fewer come out there's a deficit, but the aim is to break even by year's end. Naturally, in VOC style, boat/gear borrowing is free, and the "instructors" are all volunteers.

Details about the session

The sessions now have two parts:

  • First Half

For beginners and those wanting to work on specific skills, club members will have time to go over the basics of rolling and some flat water boat handling with direct instruction. For those who just want to get exercise and play, the games can begin right at opening.

  • Second Half

For the second half of the time a larger organized game of polo will be the main focus. The Polo part is more fun than you might think; it gets your mind away from over-thinking the rolling process and is good practice for working on boat control and balance.

For sanity's sake there'll be an 18 boats limit for the pool session - we officially only have half the pool so it would be very crowded with any more than that...

Gear???

bring a waterproof / windproof coat if you dont have a wetsuit or drytop it should not be too cold but it will be wet (even if it doesn't rain)

Gear Borrowing

How it works: We look at the numbers signed up each week who say they need to borrow gear, and miraculously between the club's fleet of kayaks and awesome club-spirited boat lenders, we always seem to have enough. (Do expect to share some, but that's pretty usual at a pool session anyway)

IMPORTANT: If you signed up and then change your mind PLEASE take yourself off the wiki list before noon on the day of the session (or email the organizer). First, your spot might be one someone else would like, and second, it can take up to an hour of driving for our volunteers to bring a borrowed boat in for you. Keep your VOC volunteers happy, not grumpy!
