Archive talk:Intro to Backcountry Skiing 2008

Do we really require "basic skiing" skills for this trip? It seems historically that the VOC encourages people who've never even seen snow before to strap on tele gear and hope for the best... It would be best if people had at least the most rudimentary skiing knowledge, but enthusiasm and toughness may be an acceptable substitute... Scott Webster 22:12, 24 October 2007 (PDT)

I just copied last year's text. Feel free to change it to your likening. Champagne 23:11, 24 October 2007 (PDT)
IMO an overnight backcountry skiing trip with a heavy pack is not the optimal way to learn how to ski. If "just getting out and surviving with skis" is the goal, then this trip is just a repeat of winter longhike. Scott Nelson
Yeah, I mostly agree... but some people who are trying to start backcountry skiing won't be able to make winter longhike or tele school. Should we require them to go ski at a resort first? Certainly it isn't a bad idea... I think I'll leave it as requiring basic skiing skills, exceptions can be made as required. Scott Webster 12:10, 25 October 2007 (PDT)

Webster, people are still signing up in group 1 (aka. Silversides) since you've posted that the trip is closed only at the bottom of group 2. Champagne

I will add another FULL sign, but Andrew is a bit of a special case since he talked to me earlier (and was on the trip list before too). Scott Webster 12:22, 28 January 2008 (PST)
