Synopsis
The idea behind this trip is to clear as much slide alder as possible on the Skookum E Branch logging road so that VOC (and other) parties may attempt to climb Mamquam on regular 2 day weekends sometime in the late spring. A bunch of work has already gone into this project, but there is still a lot left to do and the snow is coming fast, so it has to be done soon!
We will drive up on Saturday morning, spend the day clearing the road, car-camp Saturday night (bonfire!) and spend Sunday once again working on the logging road. Warm pub and cold beer in Squamish will ensue.
The last couple of kilometers of the logging road are pretty seriously water-barred and 2WD vehicles will not be able to drive up it. That said, this last section of road is not very long, and at the very least I can shuttle everybody's gear up in my 4Runner (I've driven up there before and got to the top without any scraping, but I believe it was pretty close. For driver' ref I have a 2nd gen 4Runner).
It might be cold and wet, but the work we accomplish will definitely be very useful, and it is a well known fact that a bunch of merry VOCers can make any 'chore' fun! Especially with the party on Saturday night!
Date
The pretrip meeting is Tuesday November 23rd, 7:00pm in the clubroom.
The trip is November 27th - 28th 2010.
Drivers should have picked up their passengers and be driving over the Lions Gate Bridge at 6:30am on Saturday morning. It is the passengers' responsibility to contact their drivers. We will meet at the Mamquam FSR turn-off off of Highway 99 - the Apron car park - at 0730hrs and drive up the logging roads together - initially easy 2WD lc.
Equipment List
If you have pruners, saws or any other tools you think you could use to cut slide alder, bring them. If you don't, then don't worry about it - there will be enough to go around. Bring gloves you don't mind wearing while handling wet slide alder - you will probably not want to use your bare hands or your brand new 180$ Black Diamond gloves.
Day gear:
- gloves, ideally multiple pairs
- toque
- waterproofs - jacket and pants
- warm clothes (fleece etc)
- decent pair of (hiking) boots and socks to keep your feet warm
- backpack to carry stuff
- food (lunch) and water
Camping gear:
- sleeping bag
- sleeping pad
- headlamp
- spare, dry change of clothes - recommended especially since we're car-camping and not carrying our stuff anywhere!
- tent (to share)
- stove and pots (to share)
- spoon/fork/spork - whatever your preferred backcountry utensil is
- food for dinner
We can make up food-groups at the pre-trip meeting or here on the wiki depending on what people feel like...
If you have a big tarp, bring it... If you want to bring a guitar/ukelele/any other musical device, do it. Even if it's a cello - I'll drive it up there.

Rides
Drivers - please indicate whether your car is 4WD or not, how many passengers you can take, and where you're based. Everyone - please say whether you own a tent, stove, any slide alder destroying tools or any super-cool items you want to bring with you for saturday night ;-)
