Synopsis

This is a beginner friendly winter ski day trip. The beginner part means that we will help beginners and wait for them, but you must be fit, prepared for the weather, have backcountry skied before and importantly: must have probe, shovel and transceiver and know how to use them. The final destination will be decided closer to the trip, based on the forecast and avalanche hazard. Some options: Telemagique Ridge (near Callaghan), Mount Sproatt (near Whistler), Zoa Peak, Zupjok or Great Bear (all on the Coquihalla, so a bit far), and others. We will probably leave quite early, since the days are short. Since this is a last minute day trip, we will organize it on the wiki and message board - no pre-trip meeting.

UPDATE:

We will be heading to Great Bear Peak on the Coquihalla. The route starts with a section along an old snow covered road, and then an ascent through open forest and glades to Iago Peak. From there we have the choice of skiing 200-300m runs on the north side of the peak, or heading along the ridge to Great Bear Peak proper. Total distance (there and back) is about 10km with an elevation gain of 520m, starting at 1220m.

The days are still very short, so we should get an early start. Drivers should be on highway #1 at 6:15am and drive directly to the trailhead. If you intend to make any stops, leave earlier to account for this, so we don't all have to wait for you.

We'll be meeting at exit 217 of highway #5 (Coquihalla), on the north side, by the washrooms. To get to the washrooms, take exit 217, and go through the underpass. This is the same exit used by people heading to Needle Peak. To get to highway #5, take highway #1 to Hope, and disregard the exits leading to highway #1 and #3, and the road just turns into highway #5.
