Intronight
Last year I suggested that we had an Intro night for new and prospective members. To get new members excited about the upcoming trips and the club in general and to convince others to join the club. It was decided that the Intronight would be the trip coordinators responsibility. Last year we had the Intronight in the clubroom but that turned out to be a little bit too small, so this year I booked a room in Woodward. That turn out to be a good idea, as about 150 people showed up. I had also made sure to advertise the event well at club days, as all the handouts had a little advertisement about Intronight. On the evening I showed a little slideshow about the possibilities the club offer and about my time in the VOC. Then I talked about general information like signing up for trips and so fourth. Quartermaster Jacob talked about the gear room. We answered questions, sold memberships and Longhike tickets. Overall a very successful evening. More information and suggested agenda can be found on Intronight logistics
Glacier School
As always glacier school was very popular and the wiki sign-up filled up very fast. Again this year the 10 instructors and 30 students on G1 went to Anniversary Glacier, while a G2 group with 2 instructors and ~8 student went to climb Mt. Baker.
A week before glacier school Christian Veenstra and I decided to digitalize the Info booklet, but instead of just putting it into a computer Christian ended up rewriting the whole thing.
- Created a time line for the organization of glacier school, which can be found on the Glacier school logistics page
Jared Memorial Mountain safety lecture
This was the second time the VOC organized the memorial lecture. Usually it consist of a lecture of some kind and a movie. I found that it was kind of unclear what we want to get out of the lecture. I found it hard to find a topic about safety in the mountains that would actually be useful and interesting for the average VOC'er. I find that is not fitting to have a lecture on avalanche awareness, as a 1 hour lecture is useless and the ACC's workshop is held just a couple of weeks before. It might be something to discuss with the exec. However maybe the lecture is mostly for Jared's friends and family? As for the movie this year we showed The fine line. I think I was more likely to get caught in an avalanche after seeing it.
Anyway, this event could definitely get better in someway, but I don't really know how.
- Here is the poster I made: Media:JaredPoster.pdf
- And the How to list is posted on Exec reports - Public Relations#How to Organize the Jared Stanley Memorial_Lecture
Avalanche courses
The avalanche courses was a lot boring of work, but it is cool that we managed to run 6 courses this year. It is great to have many avalanche trained people to run trips in the coming year. I did not go on any of the courses, but I heard so good feedback.
- I made a wiki page for the planning, it can be found here: Avalanche course logistics
Winter Longhike
This year Winter Longhike was organized by the climbing wall coordinator Paul Lanfranchi.
- A suggsted time line for the organization can be found on Winter Longhike logistics
Other random stuff This year the club decided to advertise with some posters. Anna Sobieniak helped us make some really cool once. I just helped get permission from the photographers and objects.
- I will make sure that the posters can be found here for future use ASAP.
I also put together some signs for the clubroom as people seemed to have difficulty finding the clubroom.
- They will also be available here soon
