Trip description
The theme is 'Intro to Backcountry Skiing/Snowboarding', back at the popular Diamond Head area, but this time we'll continue past Red Heather to stay overnight at the Elfin Lakes Shelter. This is an excellent beginner-friendly destination, and new-to-skiing folks are highly encouraged to come! One-way trip distance is 11km, and the cost is $10 to stay in the shelter, and now $10 to tent. It's one of the closest ski destinations to Vancouver, and there's a few nice peaks in the area where one can practice their headplants.
Gear Required
You'll need a pair of skis, boots, skins, and poles to transport you up to the shelter, or alternatively a splitboard. From past experiences please don't bring snowshoes plus a snowboard, you will regret it. All other required gear can be found on the ski hut trip gear list. Key issue: 'none of your clothes should be made out of cotton'.
Pre-Trip Meeting
The pre-trip meeting will be held on Wednesday January 26, 2010 @ 6pm in the VOC clubroom. Rides will be formalized then. If you cannot make the pre-trip meeting, please contact Ignacio, or we'll assume you are not coming on the trip. You should definitely make the meeting if this is your first trip, or if you're not sure what you're doing...
Driving Instructions
- Chains are strongly recommended and sometimes required by parks staff to go to the parking lot. Note that getting to the parking lot is one thing getting down is another.
- Last passenger pick-up should be at 7am.
The road washed out at the start of the year so there's a Diamond Head Access Detour: Please use route through Quest University to get onto the Mamquam/Ring Creek Road that is used to access the Diamond Head Area of Garibaldi Park, as there is a washout on the lower portion of Mamquam Road. Directions for the detour are as follows:
- Turn right on Mamquam Road off HW 99 (north bound) as to normally access park
- turn left on Highlands Way S,
- turn right onto The Boulevard and follow this road straight for ~1.5km until you reach a round-about at Quest University,
- take the first right on the round-about and follow this road to where it meets Mamquam Road,
- turn left onto Mamquam Road and continue to the Diamond Head Parking Area as per usual directions.
