Start: Saturday, Aug. 16th

Description:
I have officially booked a campsite so the trip is no longer tentative!
Join me and your fellow VOC'ers for an unforgettable week of adventure in the heart of the Canadian Rockies! This trip is centered on peak bagging and long day hikes to some of Banff’s most breathtaking summits. Along the way, we will sightsee, unwind around the campfire, and admire the Milky Way with some stargazing and astrophotography!
The Plan:
The finalized group will leave for Banff on Saturday, the 16th. Based on the final numbers, we will reserve either one campsite (for up to 6 people) or two (for up to 12 people) at the Protection Mountain Campground. As people arrive, we’ll set up camp, unwind after the long drive, and finalize plans for the exciting week ahead. Finally, to end the week we will break camp and head home on Sunday, the 24th.
**Notes**
- The sites at Protection Mountain are unserviced so participants should come prepared for minimal amenities.
- I will most likely be in Alberta before the trip and will not be able to drive anyone myself.
Who This Is For:
This trip is designed for those with intermediate experience in hiking, camping, and backpacking. Since our major objectives are situated above the treeline, participants should be comfortable navigating alpine terrain. Many of the potential routes will involve scrambling and require confidence on loose, rugged, or exposed sections. While not tailored for beginners, this trip welcomes participants who have spent time in the mountains and are looking to challenge themselves with some bigger objectives!
Cost:
The cost of the trip will vary depending on the final numbers, but participants will share the gas expenses for the drivers and contribute to the cost of the campsite reservations. As of right now, 8 nights at Protection Mountain costs $340, which comes to about $60 per person if the group fully fills one or both campsites. Attendees will also be responsible for their own meals, although the group may decide to organize some communal meals if there’s enough interest. It's hard to say what the exact cost will be, but participants should plan to spend upwards of $250 (rough guess) by the end of the trip when factoring in both shared and personal expenses.
Gear:
Participants should bring gear suited for hiking, camping, and peak bagging. Recommended items include:
- Tents (to be shared)
- Sleeping bags and pads
- Helmets (safety first 😎)
- First aid kits
- Headlamps
- Typical backpacking gear, such as hiking poles, portable stoves, bear spray, etc.
Signups:
Because this trip is geared toward members with intermediate levels of experience, signups will not be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Priority will be given to participants who can drive and carpool. If you’re interested, please add your name under either “Interested” or “Committed” (for those who are seriously considering attending). These lists will help gauge interest and determine if the trip will go ahead. Once there’s enough interest, I’ll share a Google Form to gather more details and determine a finalized attendee list.
Lastly, please note that this is not a guided trip in any way, but is instead a collaborative adventure with fellow VOC members!
