Category: Bikepacking (camping + cycling; riders carry all of their gear, and bike over a long distance)
Description: Saysutshun (formerly Newcastle Island) is a small island (3.7 km^2 - approx. 10% smaller than Stanley Park) off the coast of Nanaimo. The plan is to go there by bicycle via Horseshoe Bay, camp, explore the island, then head back the next day. While this trip is certainly much easier than most other bikepacking trips to the Gulf Islands, it still requires a reasonable level of fitness and preparation.
There is minimal riding to do on Saysutshun itself; the bulk of the riding will be the journey from Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay. From UBC, it's 35 km, with 261 m of elevation gain, and 335 m of elevation loss (hilly!). Google Maps estimates this to take two hours.
The aim is to leave at 9 am and catch the 11:25 am ferry to Nanaimo (Departure Bay Terminal). From there, it is a short ride (< 5 km) to the terminal for Saysutshun. Nanaimo - Saysutshun ferries operate half-hourly, so we'll just roll up and hop on the next departure. We can then set up camp on Saysutshun, explore the island (up to 22 km of trails - the most popular being an 8 km loop around the island), then pack up the next day and head back. All timings are negotiable and can be discussed further in the pre-trip meeting.
The bistro on Saysutshun closes at 4pm, so packing one dinner and one breakfast is essential. For the two lunches, you can either pack those too, or grab something on the ferry and/or in Nanaimo.

Cost
Ferry Ticket (Horseshoe Bay - Nanaimo): $19.35 (one-way)
Ferry Ticket (Nanaimo - Saysutshun): $15 + $5 bike fee (return)
Camping Fee: $6.10*
Total Price: $64.80 + additional expenses (e.g. food)

Equipment
You Will Require a Bicycle
Gravel bikes are the most appropriate, but any pushbike will be fine. Electric bikes are explicitly forbidden, by decree of the Saysutshun authority.
It is not mandatory to have equipment like specialised bicycle bags, panniers, etc. but they are extremely helpful. The more you put on the frame, the less you have to carry on your back, and the more pleasant the ride! The club rents paniers.
