Description:

Welcome to my summer* bike-touring trip series "Island Hops and Hilltop Stops" to the Gulf Islands! Awaiting you is an unforgettable adventure through picturesque landscapes, gruelling hills, and BC Ferries. Whether you're an experienced cyclist or a beginner, this trip series aims to introduce you to bike-touring and make you more comfortable with your bike.

I seem to have caught the bike-touring bug ever since my trip to Saturna Island and with the lack of bike trips in the VOC, something had to be done. The plan is to visit as many Gulf islands as possible before the school year starts. The current tentative lineup is as follows (I plan to increase difficulty with each week):

  1. Gabriola Island + Thetis Island
  2. Pender Island
  3. Mayne Island
  4. Salt Spring Island
  5. Galiano Island
  6. Saturna Island (Arguably one of the easiest Southern Gulf Islands but seemed like a fitting way to end the Southern Gulf Island Trips)
  7. Lasqueti Island
  8. Denman & Hornby Island

Admittedly, I don’t have much bike-touring experience** so I will be learning as we progress. There will potentially (unless we get some skilled people) be times when we search “How to fix X beginner tutorial” or have to push our bike after being unable to fix said part. BUT, there will also be times when our worries disappear and we are present. There will be times when we think life might just actually be okay.

Most of the trips will either be overnight or multi-day trips. I won’t require any backcountry camping experience but will go through what’s needed to be self-sufficient. This is also a great way to get said camping experience as we are never too far from civilization.

I might try to run some bike skills and maintenance workshops throughout the series with the help of more experienced members but nothing is confirmed regarding this. Please reach out if this is something you are willing to help with.

Trip Overview

  • Location: Salt Spring Island
  • Approx. Total Distance: To and back from Ferry: 60KM, Salt Spring: TBD
  • Elevation: Salt Spring: TBD
  • I’ll have pre-trip to go through the trip plan and answer any questions or concerns. I can also run gear hours so you can rent out the gear you need.

Logistics

  • We will be using Tsawwassen ferry terminal for all our sailings [Eburne → Tsawwassen Terminal: 30km Minimal Elevation]
    • I aim to meet up at Eburne Park just before the bridge
    • We will group ride to the George Massey Bike Shuttle to cross the tunnel
    • Continue the group ride until the ferry terminal
    • You can also just transit directly to the terminal or any section on the way
    • Similar situation on the way back :)
  • Associated Costs
    • Campground Fees (Where applicable) → Free
    • Ferry Tickets → $30 - $60
    • Food
  • Further logistics and exact costs will be trip-specific and finalized during the pre-trip

I have kept the trip dates during the week to avoid the summer weekend crowds. However, if more people are available on the weekends I can potentially move the dates.

If you have any questions or need further information about the bike-touring trip series, feel free to reach out via text or email. See you around!

*potentially longer

** I will have the necessary tools to fix most common issues, maybe just not the skills quite yet

*** At your own risk as there might not be a place to set up a hammock. Although I plan to hammock camp, so I’ll try to make it so we always do.
