Description:

Have dreams of learning the best kind of climbing... trad climbing? This is a great trip for you! To be crystal clear, this is NOT an instructional trip. This trip will act as a way to teach other VOCers how to safely pursue trad climbing and ask questions to someone who is fairly active in the trad world. Anyone from 0 knowledge of trad climbing to novice trad climbers (having completed a few easy trad routes but nothing more) will make perfect candidates for this trip.

The plan is to head up to the Smoke Bluffs and go over some basic trad/multipitch concepts. The trip dates are a WINDOW of time in which I am potentially around to conduct the clinic, depending on weather, my study schedule for finals, and other factors. If there is enough interest, we could camp in Squamish for a night and make it a longer trip with more time to practice trad skills and enjoy all of the joys that come dirtbagging in Squamish have to bring. The exact schedule for what we’ll end up doing will ultimatly depend on the dynamics and experience of the group amongst other factors. Ultimatly, I want to essentially provide a jump start to people getting into trad climbing, rather than loosely teaching everything in a short time frame.

Due to the nature of trad climbing, I am requiring Rock 3 (or equivalent experience) as a prerequisite that will be strictly enforced! If you do not feel comfortable building basic anchors and leading easy sport routes, this trip is unfortunatly not for you (perhaps next year). Given the enforcement of prereqs, this trip will not be based on who signed up first but rather who I think will benefit most from my help. Having a car also helps as I will need a ride up to Squam too.

I am also limiting the number of people on the trip to ~6 (1-2 car groups) additional members plus myself so I can give high quality help to a small group rather than subpar advice to a large group. If there is enough interest, I will perhaps add a second iteration of this trip to accommodate more people.

If you are interested, please sign up as interested, answer the questions, and I will send out an email soon to arrange pretrip meeting, etc. You will need personal climbing gear (ATC, harness, helmet) but not trad or group gear (though, if you have a rope, cams, etc. please bring them!)
