Description:

Beautiful beaches. Windswept trees. Waterfalls. Sea otters. Seals. Sea lions. Epic mud. Technical terrain. Scrambling on slippery rocks. The possibililty of constant rain. An interesting history. These are some of the things that make the west coast of Vancouver Island a wonderful place to hike, and we'll probably find some of them on the Nootka Trail.

Logistics

The Nootka Trail is only ~40 km, but I'd like to stretch it to five hiking days to allow time for side trips and exploring. Adding on two travel days, we'll be out of Vancouver for seven days in total.

We will get to the trail by water taxi out of Tahsis. As a result, this trip will be slightly more expensive than trips that can be reached just by car. Everyone should expect to pay around $300 in transportation costs, including the water taxi, gas, ferries, and an access fee to the local First Nation.

I will be limiting this trip to 10 people because that is how many fit in the water taxi.

Prerequisites

Everyone coming on this trip must have done a previous backpacking trip involving two or more nights of sleeping in a tent. (Hut trips don't count. Car camping doesn't count.)

Pre-trip meeting

I've listed the pre-trip meeting as April 25 at 4 pm. A week or two before that, I'll see if this works for everyone. If not, we'll find a new time that does.

How to sign up

The trip is currently full. The committed list will serve as a waiting list—so sign up as committed if you want to be on the waiting list.

Questions?

I'm always happy to hear questions, suggestions, and comments. Send me an email or text or message me on the VOC discord.

------------------------------

If this trip is successful, I will probably plan a more advanced coastal bushwack later in the summer. For example, I think it'd be fun to circumnavigate Brooks Peninsula. Maybe this could be done at the beginning of July or August to take advantage of the Canada Day / BC Day weekend... If you want to discuss, don't hesitate to reach out. :)
