Description:

Update: Changed to Gargoyles Day Trip Due to Conditions.

Fat Dog mountain is a popular (winter only) access to the Three brothers mountains in Manning park. The ski touring route up and down to Fat Dog is relatively easy as it mostly follows a logging road and thus is a good location for folks who are newer to touring (like me).

The idea is to drive out to Manning park and ski tour up the fat dog trail to snow camp there. We'd be camping on the mountains without any amenities (i.e. there is no hut), so good winter camping gear is needed. Depending on the pace of the group, we then could do some laps on Burnt Knoll around our camp. None of this really involves terrain with siginificant avalanche danger.

On Sunday, I'd hope for an early start and maybe go up to Three Brothers for a somewhat longer ski "lap". We'd hopefully be back at the camp by lunch time, pack up our things and then ski back to the car. The itinerary for the second day might be a bit ambitious, but should be totally doable for more experienced/ fit skiers. Going to Three Brothers is totally optional and we can always split the group, i.e. a few of us can go to Three Brothers and a few stick close to the camp.

Even though the skiing won't be too difficult, this trip is not suitable for people who are very new to skiing and backpacking. However, this is a great trip for people who have a few days of backcountry experience already and would like to get out more! While the skinning up to where we camp will not involve any avalanche terrain, the slopes around Three Brothers (and even Burnt knoll to some extent) are steep enough to pose avalanche hazards. I am still newer to touring myself and expect that we can all practice good collective decision making throughout the trip.

Required Skills:

  • AST 1 or equivalent, and you have practiced companion rescue skills since taking the course
  • You must be comfortable skiing black runs in the resort in all conditions
  • This is not your first day skiing in the backcountry
  • You are able to actively participate in the decision making process during the trip

Required Gear:

  • Avi gear (beacon, shovel, probe)
  • Touring Skis, helmet
  • winter camping gear (sleeping bag and mats, tent, stove, ...)

Note: The trip will be dependent on weather and snow conditions, and won't happen if the snow is mediocre in Manning but great in the Sea to Sky area (unless somebody else takes over the trip lead). The trip would likely be postponed by 2 weeks to March 19 weekend if the conditions aren't great.

Please feel free to send me an email if you have any questions about the trip/ you are unsure if you have the skills/ gear needed to join the trip.
