From Roland Burton

It is Sunday morning and I am back home after a full nights sleep (finally). The moving of the Hut parts was very stressful and a lot of work; from the back yard to the front yard, onto the trucks (we had to get a second truck), trucking it all to an unknown gravel pit, waiting for holes in the weather, hoping the helicopter wouldn't need to fly back to its nest for more fuel, and hoping it would all fit into our budget. In the end it all worked perfectly, the stuff is up there, the crew (8 flew, two hiked)is up there, JP is flying to New Orleans and I am sweeping sawdust from the garage, and looking after my kiddies.

The next adventure in the hut series will be the hut assembling. This will take place on the week (and attached weekends) of Saturday June 18 to Sunday June 26. If you expect you can make it for the week, or either weekend, plese sign up on the WIKI, or you could email me and I'll put you on the WIKI. There will not be a helicopter to transport you up there; we'll have to walk in with our overnight gear. The old hut is available so we don't need tents. We'll need to haul some food up for ourselves.

From Scott Nelson

As Roland described, the flight in was a success on Saturday. Once everyone was up there, we packaged up everything in waterproof plastic, and weighed it down with rocks as the wind started to pick up. It snowed saturday night and all day sunday, about 40-50cm. On Sunday morning we treked up to the new hut site, adjusted some of the plastic coverings, and pulled the boxes of food back to the brew hut on the sled. The rest of the day was spent cooking, eating, and wondering when the weather would improve.

On Monday morning it was still a whiteout, but the wind and snow had stopped. Eveyone except Scott Napier and Charlie Magnusson (who had to back in town early) went to work on the foundation. We cleared the site of snow, laid out the foundation, dug some holes, and moved some big rocks, and even drilled some holes in the rocks. Karine took an inventory of all the available tools which we now have on site. When it was time to go, we lugged most of the hand tools back to the brew hut and packed up. We left the hut at about 4 to slog back to the cars through all the new snow. Fortunately we had Scott and Charlie's track to follow out. Dinner was at the Shady Tree Pub in Squamish.

Results:

  • Rough survey completed, back end of hut points somewhere between SE and SSE into the prevailing wind.
  • Holes Dug : 6/6
  • Boulders excavated and moved to site : 5/5 (1 footing is directly on bedrock)
  • Boulders placed in foundation holes: 3/5
  • Holes drilled in rock for rebar: 3/18
  • Rebar glued : 0/18
  • Cement piers poured: 0/6

Foundation to do:

  • Move remaining 2 boulder into holes.
  • Adjust position of boulders so that footings will be centered on them.
  • drill remaining holes in boulders.
  • Use rocks and/or concrete to fill gaps on undersides of boulders.
  • glue rebar to boulders.
  • pour concrete footings.
