Minutes of BREW HUT Meeting October 21, 2004
Were present at that meeting:
- Kevin Murphy
- Peter Prochotsky
- Greg Rekken
- Ruben Schulz
- Karine Doucet
- Roland Burton
- Philipp Winter
- Soren Pedersen
- Jean-Philippe Mercier
1. Project Description
Roland told us a brief history of Brew Hut from the beginning until the idea of the construction of a new hut and explain why we need to rebuild it.
2.Presentation of the preliminaries plans for the hut
Jean-Philippe presented the approved plan of the proposed hut and explain what needed to be revise to improve the design. He mentioned that the shape of the roof needed to be more steep to avoid snow accumulation, more windows need to be add and tension cable are required to stabilize the structure due to excessive wind at the future location.
We concluded that a wooden stove is the best option for the future hut. The existing kerosene stove will stay on site, but will only be use in case of emergency (no more wood). With a old hut, we estimate to have enough wood for the next 10 years.
We need an architect to revise the plan. Greg will do is best to contact the architect that did the approved plan. Liz Scremin from ACC may help us. Will try to schedule a meeting with her as soon as possible. We mentioned that the army built one hut for the ACC, Liz is again the person to contact. Also, the Faculty of Education of UBC might offer us the labor (learner-carpenter) as well as BCIT students Greg will try to contact someone that he know in the Faculty of Education. J-P of Karine will try to contact BCIT. Also, one civil engineer must revise the plan. Karine agreed to revise them.
Depending who will prefab the hut (Army, BCIT, Faculty of Education or us), we need to find a place to work. The yard of Roland can probably be use, Rueben will ask for a place in the Forestry Building and we should submit a proposal to get some space at the UBC Farm.
We need to have the approval from the District of Squamish if we change the accepted plan. J-P and Karine will do their best to obtain the approval by the end of December.
3.Summary of what have been done so far in the project
Greg told us all the step he did in the project. This help us to determine accurately the status of the project. They built micro-Brew to evaluate the snow accumulation at the future location. Seems that it's a good place, not much accumulation, a lot of wind, we need to consider that for the future structure.
4.Task Division
Kevin Murphy took the responsibility of the hut construction planning. He has a lot of knowledge considering his father is a carpenter. He will make sure that the hut is built for the best.
Roland Burton will be the treasures
Ruben Schulz will do is best to determine what material is needed for the construction and to create material budget
Everybody should keep their eyes open for materials donation and bargain. So far, we have one sink, fiberglass for windows and one door.
Philipp Winter, Soren Pedersen and Peter Prochotsky are volunteer when we will need manual labor for the construction, helper for hike-work for the hut. They are also welcome to help Kevin and Ruben in their work.
5.Proposed schedule
From here to December, we hope to have a new design and the approbation of the District of Squamish.
Prebuilding should be done by April, foundations by July and the hut by itself by the end of September.
6.Varia
Web site informations and message board should be open to everyone, not restricted to VOC members. The next meeting will take place in one month.
